Mangroves and their importance in the Mexican Caribbean

Mangroves and their importance in the Mexican Caribbean

WHAT ARE MANGROVES?

Mangroves were originally trees that adapted and evolved to live in water-saturated environments, surviving the region's humid, saline conditions. But do you know why they are so important in the environment? Read on to learn about the benefits mangroves provide to their environment.

ECOSYSTEM SERVICES - WHY ARE MANGROVES IMPORTANT?

Mangroves provide significant ecosystem services to coastal communities and cities. In addition to providing fruit, they are an important source of protein for humans, who are the main beneficiaries of the visits of species that feed in mangrove forests.

The most relevant ecosystem resources offered by mangrove ecosystems are:

  • Coastal protection
Mangroves act as natural barriers against storms and erosion.
  • Biodiversity
Mangroves are a habitat for birds, fish, crustaceans, and many other species.
  • Carbon sequestration
They store large amounts of carbon, helping to mitigate climate change.
  • Fishery resources
They are nursery areas for fish and other marine organisms important to fisheries.

CHALLENGES

  • Urban development
  • Intensive aquaculture
  • Pollution
  • Sea level rise

MANGROVES VS. HURRICANES AND STORMS

You may not know that mangroves, in addition to serving as CO₂ filters, food sources, and habitats for other species, are also considered the main allies in cities that face constant storms and hurricanes.
Mangroves are a significant natural barrier, but surely you are wondering: what is their specific function during a storm or hurricane?
Well, mangroves help minimize the effects of hurricanes: flooding, destruction, contamination of the seas, and contamination of nearby aquifer systems.

Mangroves also protect some ships.

This is one of the reasons why we ALL must care for and protect mangroves against logging and the excessive use of chemicals that affect their habitats.

DID YOU KNOW?

In the areas where the mangroves are located, you can find the purest air in the city. They are considered natural lungs, which, in addition to providing high-quality oxygen by removing carbon, also help relieve stress.

TIPS FOR VISITING MANGROVES

There are many activities to do near the mangroves; some even include cenotes where you can swim.

  • During low tide, it is possible to hike along the lagoon or the mangrove area; however, it is recommended not to get too close, as one species known to inhabit areas near mangroves is the crocodile.
  • Take tours near the mangroves by kayak or small boat. These are usually harmless to the flora and fauna of these ecosystems.
  • Do not litter. Humans are the first cause of mangrove pollution. Avoid becoming part of this statistic and save your garbage until you reach the mainland or find a suitable place to dispose of it.
  • Do not bring food into the mangroves; this can attract fish, piranhas, birds, and even crocodiles.
  • Hydrate well, especially if you plan to paddle a kayak with little room for personal items.
  • Never go exploring alone. Always stay close to a group or your companions.
